Looking for a pollinator friendly native with tons of appeal? The relatively unknown Stachys moneri 'Humelo' received the highest distinction in 2019, going home with the Perennial Plant Associations "Plant of the Year Award". Why? Well first, it produces food for a wide range of pollinators including many species of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Second, while it is easy to care for it produces full panicles of cone-shaped violet and magenta colored flowers on strong stems. These absolutely pop above full feathery bright green foliage. The flowers make nice cuttings and really stand out in the garden as they rise above the foliage of other plants. Hummelo is a compact and tidy cultivar coming in at 18 inches high and wide making it a great plant for a clean looking garden. In a study of all Stachys cultivars by the Chicago Botanical Garden, it was rated best all around for its tidy appearance and higher flower coverage.
Grow Stachys in full sun for best results, but the plant will also grow in partial shade. Well drained soil is necessary for this plant to succeed. You can divide every 3 to 4 years in the spring or more frequently depending on growth if plants becomes woody in the center.
