Kay's Appalachian Mist is a beautiful disease resistant dogwood that grows to be 20 feet high and 20 feet wide. It has attractive cream colored blooms that begin to appear when the tree is still young, around 2-3 years old. If you have struggled with dogwoods due to powdery mildew, Kay's Appalachian Mist is one of, if not the most mildew resistant dogwood cultivar available.
The legend of Kay's Appalachian Mist is one of determined horticulture and a search for easy to grow disease resistant Dogwoods. In the late 1990s, the North American Dogwood was under siege by a number of fungal blights including dogwood anthracnose and powdery mildew. It was during this time that The University of Tennessee set out with a group of dedicated nursery growers to create a solution to this problem, a line of dogwoods that held a genetic advantage over the fungus. 980,000 dogwood seedlings were set out and cross-bred over generations, of these seedlings a handful emerged with exceptional qualities. Kay's Appalachian Mist was selected for it's profuse blooms and it's incredible resistant to powdery mildew. To this day, there are few North American Dogwoods that can compete with Kay's for it's beauty and resistance.
The white dogwood is a special tree, because it rewards the gardener all year. As the days lengthen and warm, stark white blooms cover the tree and announce the arrival of spring. When summer arrives the upward branching and deep green textured leaves provide an elegant and graceful appearance among larger straighter shade trees, evergreens, or the sharp geometry of your home. Swirling scarlet and purple leaves add to the color show in the fall, along with brilliant red berries that attract up to 36 species of songbird through the early winter.
This breathtakingly beautiful tree is an excellent choice to plant along streets, near large buildings, next to patios or as a property border. It provides an eye-catching display when planted in rows, but also excels as a solo planting, or among towering giants. Dogwoods do best in some shade and rich soil, but can adapt to a variety of conditions with proper care. Dogwoods do best with 2-4 inches of organic mulch.
