Jelena also known as 'Copper Beauty' is such an interesting witch hazel. From a distance the 1" tassel-like blooms appear an orange copper, but up close it's more of a peach-berry smoothie. Witch hazel is a unique plant in that it will bring blooms when your garden is dormant and the blooms of Jelena emerge in February. For us, these blooms herald the last days of winter. Each one carries a slightly sweet scent that will take your imagination toward the warmer days ahead. We know when we see and smell them that our grey snowy landscape will soon be alight with the sounds and colors of spring.
'Jelena' is a cross between the Japanese and Chinese witch hazels and tops out at 8-10 ft. tall and 10-15 ft. wide. It is a very hardy plant and has few problems with disease. Witch hazel is an under-appreciated plant in the United States, but most homes in Europe, particularly Germany, have at least one witch hazel in the garden. It grows best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, but can tolerate some clay.
